Living at the edge of the ocean
With the beach at our doorstep
Watching the breaking waves fall over
Advancing as lines of foam
As the tide ebbs and flows
Day after day in the rain or sunshine
Eventually the novelty wears off
Into a certain repeating sameness
The sound of the surf becomes just noise
The swirling water no longer fascinates
The usual shorebirds pick their way past
Without attracting anyone's attention
But the awareness is always present
Being beside this vast expanse of water
Feeling the perpetual motion and immense mass
Even with the blinds closed as we sleep
The distance to the horizon always out there
Where everything vanishes into a point
Impossible for us to see beyond
Left to imagine what lies on the other side
