keeping count

We are counting down the days again

Waiting to leave this cold gray weather behind

Looking ahead to months of warm sunny walks

Ready to make our seasonal migration south

And we keep count of our time together as a couple

Not that official events are the be all and end all

We do mark the day our pairing went on record

Even as our love continues to grow with the years

I hear your tone of voice when you speak to me

And I know you are happy in our shared life

And nothing else really matters as much to me

Remembering when you first said what you knew

Relationships are important you declared

And we both know from experience what it takes

For two people to count on each other

To be there listening and giving support

There are many personal achievements

You and I can count up to our credit

Solving problems and improving people's lives

But my greatest satisfaction of all is in being us

indefensible

If the only people voting were white men

The most racist politicians would always get in

So they make laws and use deceptions to that end

Designed to suppress the vote of everyone else

With a government created by them of them for them

This is white male minority rule and always has been

In this country where all dollars are created equal

And corporations have full legal rights as people

The advances won in the struggle too soon subverted

Like the racist stars and bars flag taken down quickly replaced

With that sinister blue stripe flag supporting police brutality

Defending criminal cops and systemic racism

I see them parading in their oversize pickup trucks

Pushing up close behind to intimidate other cars

Weaving around in traffic spewing diesel fumes

Reveling in their white male antisocial privilege

As a white man myself the cops rarely bother me

Though anyone could be charged with some infraction

I don't fit the profile of who gets harassed and hassled

Which no one should if we abolish the police

In these times of mass incarceration of people of color

Under a constitution that allows slavery in prisons

With police functioning as modern day slave catchers

To supply the labor to the prison industrial complex

Getting rid of them and the courts and laws and judges

Means replacing all of it with a true justice system

That gives everyone the opportunity to live a good life

Though it will be awhile before all people come around
