peak sunlight

Older people are better at forgetting

Especially what happened most recently

Which contributes to our happiness

Being able to let go of troubling thoughts

But imprinted in memory deep within

Distressful times from many years ago

May rise up wakeful in the dark of night

Stirring a restless busy brain churn

Dropping off to sleep comes more easily

Under covers in a dark quiet safe space

Drifting into unconsciousness

Floating away on gentle breath waves

Last night the sun limited my sleep

Though the heavy blinds were down

On the shortest night of the year

The early dawn bright sky urged me awake

The day ahead at the start of summer

So expansive seemingly endless

After month after month of daily increase

The sunlight hours double the darkness

And yet tomorrow the shrinkage starts

In our ever changing temporal existence

And when this day returns a year from now

The world will be in a different place
