Walking on the beach at night
We can see in the darkness
The firm flat expanse of sand at low tide
Where our footsteps will soon vanish
We pause to look out to sea and up
As our eyes adapt to the dim glow
Absorbing the starry sky spectacle
Interlaced with airplane traffic
In this enormous empty space
We don't need to see where our feet are
As we move unafraid in the calm quiet
Listening to the gentle waves offshore
I feel like I am weightless floating in midair
Walking is almost effortless here
As I hear you softly humming to yourself
A song learned in your childhood
Que sera sera whatever will be will be
The future’s not ours to see que sera sera
And I know you are happy and at peace
As we stride in unison alone together
We can see the outlines of beach houses
Perched atop the dune off in the distance
One illuminated in red we learn to recognize
Like a lighthouse marking the way back
We take the public boardwalk access in and out
Transitioning from night light to bright light
One hundred steps up and down over the dune
Then across the road to where we stay
