John would like to be writing the next chapter
Completing the continuing story of Joe
A historical novel sequel to his earlier book
But current events take precedence
He is well into his eighties now
And I will be joining him there next year
Along with friends celebrating theirs this summer
An age that once seemed unlikely
Analysis based on historical knowledge
That's something John can offer
To younger people organizing protests
Providing a framework for understanding
As the crisis of capitalism intensifies
In ever expanding wars and repression
Provoking rebellion and resistance
The next chapter is for the youth to write
To be on the other side of eighty
Actuarially not expected to live out the decade
Though you may not feel the end is near
The awareness informs how you live your life
My soon-to-be octogenarian outlook values
Making time for personal connections
Volunteering to help maintain a nature preserve
And enjoying being here alive in this world
I admire all that John has done and is doing
And I hope he gets to finish his book
And I am also still around to read it
So we can continue our conversation
