slowing down

We partake of the simple pleasures

Sharing sixteen years so far

Slowing down being in no hurry

Enjoying the life we have

Sitting at our dinner table

Looking out watching the birds

June is the most entertaining month

As the next generation emerges

The house wren pair bring insects

Several hundred times a day

To the nest box we put there for them

Feeding their nestlings hidden inside

This week there are fledglings fluttering

Chasing their parents begging to be fed

Their insatiable appetites on display for us

Gathered around our feeders

Every day we need to refill the seeds

As twelve species come calling

Busily providing for their hungry offspring

With our assistance given gladly

We go out every day the weather permits

Usually to a garden or a nature preserve

Getting exercise in a beautiful place

The way that retired people can

Walking more slowly has its advantages

Noticing everything around us

Free to stop and look and listen

Taking in the terrain and its life forms

The way I see it being with you

These are the happiest years of my life

You are the companion of my dreams

As we care for each other lovingly
