the trip of a lifetime

Seeing you passing through for a few days

Busy preparing for your departure

To places far removed from here

That I know very little about

Across the Pacific past the date line

As I see on the map just south of the equator

Everything and everyone will be new to you

Making the trip of a lifetime

Left your job and moved out of your apartment

Done with the existence you had constructed

Letting go of all attachments defining you

Open to a new and different narrative

Travel long deferred finally happening

Before transitioning to the rest of your life

Something you will figure out later

Because right now anything is possible

Many of your things are in storage

And quite a few are here in this house

Left behind while you are away

Making a kind of presence in your absence

It's not exactly an empty nest

And I think maybe it never will be

Like the bond we have with each other

A feeling that remains with us always

If we are the sum of our experiences

Then you will come back a changed person

Having gained a deeper understanding

Of what you want to do in your life
