Remembering childhood happy car rides
The three of us sitting in the back seat
Our mother driving the back country road
With its familiar dips and humps
Pleading with her to go faster
As we went up and over the rises
Until she would indulge our request
To give us the feeling of being airborne
I can hear us laughing as only children can
Calling out in unison "Thank you Mom!"
During our brief moment of weightlesness
Imploring her to do it again and again
There were no seatbelts in that car
Something like seventy years ago
When she named those silly bumps in the road
After our joyful cries as thankyoumoms
I was always glad to be in the car with her
No matter where we were going
For the chance to ask her anything
And perhaps enjoy a bit of playful fun
