The dark side of the moon is not dark
As is obvious if you think about it
Except as a metaphor for what we cannot see
Meaning it is us who are in the dark.
These are dark days filled with bad news
As is obvious if you think about it
Except as a metaphor for what we cannot see
Meaning it is us who are in the dark.
These are dark days filled with bad news
When hateful violence is commonplace
With twisted murderers believing racist lies
Targeting innocents in a reign of terror.
Progress in human history has an ebb and flow
That will surge forward again as certain as the tide will turn
As the rising seas of global warming and climate change
Demand radical change to meet the challenge.
Now that the ultimate survival of humanity is in doubt
When discouraging developments depress our spirits
When greed and exploitation rule our government
We who advocate science for the people are subversive.
Captive in a culture that celebrates crass consumption
Not free to share the wealth equally so no one is poor
We don’t know what it would be like under socialism
For everyone to have what is needed without envy or fear.
All of life on earth is connected in a web supporting us
Transmuting everything into everything else
The way toxic pollution becomes what we ingest
What is done to nature is done to each of us.
To care for the planet and for future generations
To make a better world than what we were given
To leave behind new sustainable solutions
That’s a life lived well, giving a gift to posterity.
Let me say I am an optimist even as the fascists mobilize
At the risk of seeming ridiculous in the face of their brutality
So desperate to perpetuate their system of oppression
Our feelings of great love for humanity will prevail.
