tectonics

When the old rules constraining what is possible
Get shredded into an endless litany of fake news stories
Subversively calling out the deep state conspiracy
We are invited to take this opportunity as our own

To be the unintended consequence opposed to fascism
Against the crony corruption of the crooked crowd
To tear down their entire political apparatus
Advancing a new vision of liberty and justice for all.

It has been too long since the last great upheaval
Like a fault line overdue for a sudden dislocation
The moment in Pogo when Alfred upends the game board
Shouting “Earthquake!” as the checkers tumble down.

No one knows exactly when the big one will happen
But there’s no doubt the increasing tension will snap
The contradiction of technology creating greater inequality
Backed by white nationalist outrages inflicted on humankind.

The false notion that the continents were fixed in place
Prevailing when “Made in USA” was affixed to most everything
Undercut when ocean rifts and trenches revealed tectonic plates
Inching inexorably along with the shifting world order.

The ruling ideology of our time asserts capitalism is inevitable
Requiring us to first change what we think is possible
To imagine what life could be like in the pursuit of happiness
If we were all in it together sharing the same fate.

As is obviously the inevitable consequence of dumping waste
In the air, on land, in the sea fouling our earth with toxins
Causing the cascade of global warming climate change
People are going to demand a complete overhaul.

There is a better way to organize society
That makes a priority of meeting people’s needs
That does science to solve problems and improve health
Subducting private profit for the public good.

interlude

Time for bed again, so soon, you say
Turning the light off and pulling the covers up
Another week gone by as we sink deeper
Into the season of long nights and cold days.

Sleep is a dreamscape moving in and out
Waking every few hours aware of this place
Settling back down into the flow of imagination
Resting easy suspended in timeless space.

The sun in the morning reflecting on the snow
Illuminating every windowed room with bright light
As we enjoy our coffee inside our warm house
Beginning our day with this simple pleasure.

Our lives have slowed down
Our needs are few
We have time for ourselves
We do only what we want to do.
