night sky watch

The crescent moon appears on the horizon

As we start our evening walk facing west

Going twice around Village Edge Circle

Observing the winter sky

Joining Venus perched above it

Where we have watched it slowly climb

Over the course of darkening December

Reaching its peak elevation

Its time as the Evening Star receding

Before swinging around like a pendulum

To appear in the east as the Morning Star

Always in proximity to the sun

The moon promises to pair close by Venus

As it advances higher seen at sunset

Two days from now as predicted

For us to admire if the clouds allow

The crescent moon passing by Venus

Evening or morning as Venus oscillates

Every nineteen months as I just learned

Switching sides soon back to dawn again

We come around the bend facing east

And there is Jupiter big and bright

Easy for us to identify and mark

Its gradual climb above the rooftops

The planets wander while the stars shift

As the tilted earth orbits the sun

Causing Orion to emerge here in January

In the exact same place as last year

We are here for the same two months

Year after year walking our evening loop

Learning the rhythm of the celestial clock

Putting things in perspective

to a young person

I don't talk much these days

And I write even less

Being a soft spoken old man

Wanting to not keep repeating myself

You will be persuaded or not

Based on your lived experience

The same as I was

Not by more words from me

But if you ask me what I think

I'm happy to share my perspective

Knowing what I know

About how things change

How you are able to live your life

Exists in the context of your time

Not the world I grew up in

Though some things remain true

The idea is to be a good person

So at least try to do no harm

And better yet make things better

To the extent possible

This is my standing request

To anyone who is listening

Real change requires people

Organized in common purpose
