ocean awareness

Living at the edge of the ocean

With the beach at our doorstep

Watching the breaking waves fall over

Advancing as lines of foam

As the tide ebbs and flows

Day after day in the rain or sunshine

Eventually the novelty wears off

Into a certain repeating sameness

The sound of the surf becomes just noise

The swirling water no longer fascinates

The usual shorebirds pick their way past

Without attracting anyone's attention

But the awareness is always present

Being beside this vast expanse of water

Feeling the perpetual motion and immense mass

Even with the blinds closed as we sleep

The distance to the horizon always out there

Where everything vanishes into a point

Impossible for us to see beyond

Left to imagine what lies on the other side

remission

Yes! To the best news ever finally received

After waiting many long months to hear it

Your surgery was a complete success

My sweet daughter is in remission at last

Finding myself on unfamiliar ground

To be given cause for a huge celebration

Not used to what I wish for coming true

More practiced with loss and disappointment

It’s really amazing how it worked out

After the first surgery failed with a grim outlook

How you found the one surgeon in the world

To go back in and remove the brain tumor

This happy day arrived not entirely unexpected

Subjectively reading your own well being

What you already sensed feeling much better

An awareness the blood work results confirmed

Following the third test in as many months

Tracking a trend that should continue

As the once elevated level declines further

Opening the prospect of a promising future

Free from anxious worry about progression

Free from fraught treatment decisions

Free from frequent medical appointments

Free to resume your life much wiser now
