October night
Jupiter and Saturn sit on either side of the moon
As it slowly moves between them from our perspective
Looking up from the northern hemisphere
Into the already dark early evening October sky
The apparent east to west motion of the moon
Chasing the sun but always falling further behind
Lagging more each day from where it appears at sunset
Moving west to east as the crescent arc fills to full circle
Then slips below the horizon while we sleep unconscious
Dreaming it will surface again overtaken by the setting sun
Doing the moon dance steps in a celestial rhythm
Shining most brightly in the cold clear air
We are covered with feathers at night now
Enjoying the almost weightless warmth
Quietly drifting letting our thoughts float away
Sleeping under a quilted down comforter
Getting up at the same time turning on lights
Waiting longer each day for the sun to appear
The seasonal sunlight contraction closes in on us
Opening up more hours for star gazing
