wherever we go
Ours is a traveling life these days
A kind of migratory existence
Everything we need brought with us
Packed in boxes loaded in our car
We head in the direction of warm weather
Renting houses for an extended stay
Exploring the local wildlife sites there
Following a circuit watching the birds
What we called home when we started out
Where we return for a while each year
Now feels like just one more transient domicile
Where we are temporary residents
I look in the closet and my chest of drawers
Thinking none of this was needed or missed
In all the months of living elsewhere
I should dispose of this superfluous stuff
But here certain objects hold special memories
Kept with us through the years of our lives
Stored in the basement or set out displayed
That welcome us back to who we once were
If life is viewed as a series of houses we inhabit
The people and passions in our past places
Dwelling now in our personal memory palace
Come along with us wherever we go
