The bridesmaid my daughter
Getting her dress altered
Does not need me there of course
But I enjoy being present
Like the day sixteen years ago
Trying on dresses for senior prom
A special father daughter moment
Remembered as I watch her fitting
Myself not relating to the events
In both cases finding them fraught
But relating to the nervous excitement
Experienced by my daughter
She stopped by overnight
On her way back from vacation overseas
Returning from a trip with her partner
In place of a honeymoon for them
Celebrating ten years together
Longer than the average marriage
These two who are happily not married
And that is fine with me
When I pick up that bridesmaid dress
Our connection will be stitched into it
For her to feel my approval
As she stands at the side of her friend
