afternoon heat

Awakening me early from a summer night’s dream
The fledgling bird called sharply again and again:
Get up get out enjoy the cooler morning air
Before the high sun heat overtakes us.

My youngest child on the other side of the equator
In Africa in the village in the group photograph
Wearing long pants long sleeves and a sweatshirt:
Warmer clothes for the opposite season.

We went out and rode our bikes ten miles along the river
Came back and did the shopping and the laundry
Too hot now to be out in the Sunday sun:
Time to read and rest and wait for the evening hours.

Closing my eyes and drifting with my thoughts
Letting the afternoon pass doing nothing.
