Who lives now where he grew up
And fell in love with the place
With the Sparkill Creek in his backyard
Flowing out through the Piermont Marsh
To the Tappan Zee expanse
Of the Hudson River estuary
Who knew the mile long Piermont Pier
When the factories still operated
When it was a working class Village
With a historical one block main street
Built when it was the Erie Railroad terminus
At the base of the only gap in the Palisades
Who now is the Mayor of Piermont
And probably knows each and every person
In this small town enclave
Not far upriver from New York City
Who has his day job to attend to
In addition to all the things a Mayor needs to do
With little if any time for a personal life
But like me he can take a moment to remember
What it was like when he was a boy
Being out in the Marsh in that wooden rowboat
Built there in the little boatyard beside the Creek
Letting the tide take us along for the ride
Going out to the flats between the Pier and the Marsh
Pulling up a trap hoping to find blue crabs
Taking in the panorama of water and sky
Feeling the refrain from the Clearwater song
I could be happy
Just spending my days
Out on the river
That flows both ways
