The Feast of Lights

Irish chocolate steamed pudding with hard sauce
The Feast of Lights so ancient a celebration
Following the winter solstice as the sun creeps up
Long before the medieval church conclave
Determined to coincide that birth date with Yule.

The promise of life everlasting
How sweet like a sugar plum fairy
As real as Santa Claus flying reindeer
The believers enjoy their happy thoughts.

Virgin birth as a form of parthenogenesis
Something that garter snakes can do
Like the one in the myth of the Garden of Eden
Manifesting the female power of creation.

Everyone dies of course
Individual lives are transient moments
Life goes on like an endless progression of waves
No matter that it is not all about us.

There is no joy to the world in false promises
Though the future is very bright indeed
When science increases our understanding
How to make the world a better place.
