Ozymandias redux
It’s out there hurtling towards Mars and beyond
And there’s nothing you or I can do about it
That obscene cherry red sports car discard
Posed with a spaceman mindless mannequin driving.
Obscene because it is a such a genius marketing stunt
Turning our solar system into a capitalist canvas
Orbiting the sun for millions of years as a prideful
advertisement
Immortalizing the decadence of the rich and famous.
Obscene because the car is a symbol of male hegemony
Parading the lustful power and speed of a luxury roadster
Desired by balding white men compensating for their decline
Showing off spending stupid money as somehow sexy.
The man with money to burn fits the storied type
Like a modern day Edison inventing technologies
Appropriating the name Tesla who was ahead of his time
Forgetting what Edison the businessman did to crush Tesla.
The Tesla like the Tucker like the DeLorean like any exotic
car
Doomed to become a relic of a moment in time
When a promoter’s vision caught the public imagination
Before everything essential behind it fell apart.
Not so many years from now Elon Musk will be dead
Like all the rest of us who are witness to his arrogance
And his orbital monument to himself will be a symbol
Left behind to remind us of his self-serving values.
This is the trash of our culture of greed and exploitation
Launched by a man who dreams of colonizing Mars
Glorified for his ambition to plunder for profit
As if the crisis of this system is not about to implode.
