Snow Moon Eclipse February 10, 2017

album

wintering

Wintering here in this florid subtropical climate
The ice and snow and freezing weather happen elsewhere
Leaving us to go about our lives in a warm place
Enjoying our pastime observing birds and nature.

Not so with the news of the day from which there is no escape
Nor do we wish to separate ourselves from current events
As we gladly joined with several thousand people here
Marching the day after against the inauguration.

Exciting and inspiring to be among so many opposed to Islamophobia
Taking to the streets and occupying the airline terminals
Supporting the immigrants who have been targeted as threats
Supporting Black Lives Matter, LGBTQ and women’s rights.

A poll gets reported that says a modest majority supports the ban
No surprise after all the years of inciting fear of Muslims and Arabs
No surprise in a country with a history of continuing racism
Not the point.  What matters is the vigor of the resistance.

When millions of people are mobilized in mass demonstrations
There is reason for great optimism that real change is coming
Against the specter of deportations and repression
Let the leadership rise up to guide us to liberation.
