February

The shortest month is more than half gone
Too soon our departure day approaches
The waxing moon in the eastern afternoon sky
Lowering day by day towards sunset full moon rise.

The only month in sync with the lunar cycle
As the quickening expands the sunlight hours
So once again we can enjoy the sunset after early dinner
Hearing the redwing blackbird singing begin again.

Here in southern Florida spring comes along already
Coloring the wet woodlands red with maple seeds
For us winter is over as we bask in the warming sun
Though we will return to the northeast cold in April.

March first we move a few hours north and east
Pausing by the beach to let the season advance
Watching the evening sky to see the birds take flight
Getting ready to join their migration towards summer.

The trees that are sprouting leaves here now
So gray and bare six weeks later when we arrive back
The early season arrival suddenly retarded, leaving us
Waiting impatiently for our second spring to show
