March madness

The birds are back.
Long distance travelers
Waves of flight moving past.
Feel the breeze.

Delighted to hear the spring concert:
Cardinals projecting staccato phrases
Flocks of robins trilling their refrains
Rapture of the magnificent mockingbird’s repertoire.

In March even the house finch sings a melody
The blue jay’s call can be sweet
The starling’s whistle musical, too.
Every bird joins the seasonal chorus.

We watch closely for the migrants
New arrivals different sights and sounds.
Spotting head stripes and a breast spot
Identify the song sparrow's special song.

Birds more heard than seen in the woods
Trees still bare but for swollen buds.
We are so ready for April and May
Between seasons now is March madness.

conjunction

Looking into the gray night sky
City lights dim the stars unseen.
We think it must be satellites we see
Those few bright spots shining forth.

But then the sky changes if you remember
One night to the next clear night.
There are two bright spots in the southwest sky
Where once there was one.

Look again the next night.
The lights have moved closer together.
Reading about it in the news.
That is Venus and Jupiter up there.

Rethinking old conclusions
Learning something new.
