tomorrow

Tomorrow you are a high school senior
The beginning of the end
The first day of the last year
Like a gestation coming to term.

How much you will enjoy your friends
Knowing your time together is closing
Experiencing the repeating calendar differently
This year every time is the last time.

For sure you will keep some connections next year
Even as you all disperse into your college lives
But all the intrigues and drama will be done
Like a long sitcom that ends production.

And this we celebrate, this loss,
Because it opens a new beginning for you,
Because the bigger stage awaits you,
Because it’s going to be your world next.

today

Time has slowed down for me in a good way.
Each moment stands still for all eternity.
Today I am feeling a deep serenity:
No worries, no regrets, just here now.

Time has stretched out for me in a good way.
I see faces young and old and see their lives
Ahead and behind, their faces morphing:
The adult in the child, the child in the adult.

I feel your presence in this place with me.
There is no separation between us.
You are with me now and from before
And for tomorrow and beyond.
