in the public interest

It's finally official now

The new mayor has been sworn in

Eager to begin to make the changes

Promised in the contentious campaign

No this is not New York City or Seattle

Though at the volunteer firehouse

They are calling him Piermont’s Mamdani

Having prevailed over those in power

This is my son who has achieved

Something I tried for and failed long ago

Fulfilling a parent’s wish for their child

To accomplish what they did not

My election defeat ended all resistance

To the gentrification of the village

Replacing the closed factories

With luxury housing on the waterfront

This historical Hudson River settlement

Original terminus of the Erie Railroad

Now struggling with its destiny

Not easily turned around

Being mayor there pays very little

An invitation to corruption played out

In the previous administration

Leaving behind financial trouble

My son is an idealist and a realist

Who knows the details inside out

With a plan for clean government

On a very local level

I'm proud of him of course

And I hope it all goes well

After years of their self dealing

For him to act in the public interest
