seventh anniversary

Carefully fitting the boxes into our car

Wedged tightly leaving no empty spaces

Firmly in place so nothing will shift

This is a pleasant packing puzzle for me

Leaving a clear view out the back window

When everything is loaded ready to go

Gives me a sense of satisfaction each time

Ready to drive all day for two days

On our seventh anniversary today

We are well practiced at this annual move

Each with our chosen tasks to complete

Calmly working together getting it done

You are the organizer with your checklists

Making sure what we need gets packed

The kitchen items and bathroom supplies

You take on the bulk of the packing

Taking care to fill each box full

Keeping the weight manageable for me

Leaving me to do the office and electronics

And of course we each pack our own clothes

What a way to celebrate our marriage

As if tomorrow we depart on another honeymoon

Except for us the feeling never ends

Being happily in love with each other

preparing to transition

In the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and office

The empty boxes are ready to be filled

Retrieved from storage in our basement

Already labeled from previous trips

In a few days we will travel to our winter quarters

Having prepared our house to be inhabited

By my daughter and her partner as they transition

Taking the season to decide upon their next move

Good for us making room in closets and drawers

Donating clothes we will never wear again

Recycling old electronic devices

Consolidating shelf space for them to use

Good for us our house will be occupied

Giving them a place to live while we are away

Watering our many house plants as needed

Perhaps keeping the birds in seed and suet

Good for them to have a two-step process

Taking the opportunity to terminate their lease now

Moving out of a place that has lost its initial charm

Having a winter sojourn here before moving on

Being surrounded by our objects and decor

Feeling our presence in our absence

As they shelter here enjoying being together

May these rooms enclose them in a loving embrace

departure thoughts

As the birds fly south the question remains

Why do they trouble to return

When they could easily remain all year

Never needing to hazard the long trip back

We who grew up in the wintry north

Naturally call this place home

Being humans able to survive in the cold

Capable of thriving under adverse conditions

I myself have fond memories ice skating

Gliding across the ice on a frozen pond

Dazzled by the glittering sun on snowflakes

Blanketing the landscape in stillness

But also enduring long hours being bone cold

Working outside for eighteen years

Something thankfully left behind in the past

Now that age leaves me easily chilled

As we prepare to travel south ourselves

Watching the winter birds arrive to eat our seeds

We leave knowing we are coming back

To the most beautiful scenery known to us

The forests and fields and flowers

The mountains and streams and lakes

Ours to enjoy in the warm weather months

When the sweet song of new life fills the air
